Expect a Miracle

Day Two

Today “A Heart Prepared: Savor the Story of Christmas Advent Legacy Journal” took me back to the miraculous pregnancies of Elizabeth and Mary. Elizabeth was barren and Mary was a virgin betrothed to Joseph. Imagine the joy Elizabeth had when she learned she was pregnant after a long wait. Being infertile in those days was frowned upon. Imagine the joy of Mary to learn it was God’s will for her to carry His child despite the negative backlash she would receive from family and the community.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. (Luke 1:26-27)

In this advent journal I was asked to write about an interesting, unusual, or surprising family story during a marriage proposal or engagement period.

Our love was a love at first sight in our twelfth grade year in the school cafeteria. Soon Dan was walking me home after school. We began talking about marriage and our plans for the future on those walks. In my freshman year at Kent State University we could not wait to marry. We eloped in November 1974 and was married by Judge Kent in Kent, Ohio. Then we had a second ceremony in July 1975 in a church along with a wedding reception in my parents home. It amazed me then how my parents were able to cook and feed so many. People in the neighborhood who were not invited were able to pop in and eat. Married at eighteen- and nineteen-years-old was statistically a doomed marriage and his father told us that. But we are still together forty-seven years later only because of God.
